Our Application Process
Mondragon continually accepts market applications for membership. Successful applicants are added to our pre-approve waiting list.
Mondragon does not accept applications for Rent Geared to Income Subsidy. Those interested in applying for a subsidized unit must contact the Region of Peel (Peel Access to Housing).
Before you decide to apply to Mondragon, you should do some research on co-operatives and the Co-operative Movement. From your research it is very important that you learn about:
- the co-operative movement
- what a co-operative is specifically a housing co-op
- the co-operative principles
- the aims of housing co-operatives
- the structure of a housing co-op
- how a housing co-op functions
- the obligations of a member of a housing co-op
- the main differences between a housing co-op and other forms of housing
- some of Mondragon’s by-laws and policies
After you have completed your research, if you decide that becoming a member of a housing co-op is the right choice for you and your family you may submit your application to our office in person or by mail. You may obtain a copy our application by clicking the link to the right “Download Market Rent Application Form.” Ensure that you have completed the application in its entirety and sign it and submit it to our office with all the required documentation and applicable fee as listed on the application form.
Once your application is received the C0-op will first perform administrative screening which includes:
- completing a credit check
- completing a landlord history check
- assess your ability to pay the applicable monthly market housing charge in full and on time
- assess your history of personal financial management (paying debts owed)
- verify all information on the application form
At the end of the administrative screening the Co-op will determine if your application should move on to the interview phase or not. Those who move on to the interview stage will be contacted by the Membership Selection Committee to schedule an interview your whole household must attend. At this interview you will be required to demonstrate your knowledge of co-operatives gained by your research.
Based upon the results of the administrative screening and interview the Board of Directors will decide whether to approve or decline your application.
Note: The Board will not provide a reason for approving or declining anyone’s application.
All units are supplied with a fridge and stove. Members are expected to make their own arrangements for gas (Enbridge), hydro (Brampton Hydro One), water and sewage (Region of Peel), cable, telephone and internet.
Members may have pets in accordance with the Municipal By-Laws for the City of Brampton and Mondragon Co-op. The Co-op also has a pet by-law that sets out the members’ responsibilities in relation to their pets. There is also a Parking By-Law which states that members may not park their vehicle/s on the roadway, which is a designated fire route, or in the Visitors Parking.
Applicants who meet the criteria for membership and have a satisfactory credit check will be invited to an orientation and interview. Note: applicants must successfully pass a credit check before being invited for an interview with the Membership Selection Committee.Upon approval by the Board of Directors, applicants will be placed on a waiting list for the appropriate size unit.
When an appropriate size unit becomes available, you will be notified. You will be required to sign an Occupancy Agreement, Electronic Fund Transfer Agreement and pay a member deposit of $1015.00, plus the first month Housing Charge. All payments are due at signing. Possession will not be granted until all fees have been paid in full.
Upon occupancy the member is entitled to all rights and privileges of membership at Mondragon Co-op as long as the member continues to uphold and abide by the terms of the by-laws, agreements, policies, and regulations set by Mondragon Co-op. Each member is entitled to one vote on any item of business for which a vote of the membership is required or sought. These items are generally reviewed and discussed by the membership at one of two annual general membership meetings held each year. There is no voting by proxy.
